The First Step Towards Housing

The First Night Program has a mission of providing comprehensive support and services to homeless individuals and women survivors of domestic violence, empowering them to achieve self-sufficiency and lead fulfilling lives. We believe in the inherent dignity and worth of every person and are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Homelessness is a complex issue that can be caused by a variety of factors, including poverty, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, and trauma. In Indiana and throughout the United States, homelessness is a significant problem, with hundreds of thousands of individuals experiencing homelessness on any given night.

One of the major contributors to homelessness in Indiana and across the U.S. is a lack of affordable housing. Many people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness do not have the financial resources to afford rent or a mortgage, and the availability of affordable housing options is often limited. This can be especially true in urban areas, where the cost of living is often higher.

Homelessness can have serious negative impacts on individuals, including physical and mental health problems, social isolation, and difficulty accessing education and employment opportunities. However, homeless individuals can be helped through a variety of housing services and support programs. These may include emergency shelters, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and other types of housing assistance.

By providing safe and stable housing and access to supportive services, such as healthcare, job training, and counseling, organizations and agencies can help homeless individuals achieve self-sufficiency and break the cycle of homelessness. Providing housing and support to homeless individuals can also have positive impacts on the larger community, by reducing rates of homelessness and improving the overall quality of life for all members of the community.

Homelessness in Indiana

It is difficult to provide an exact number of homeless individuals in any given state, as homelessness is a fluid and often hidden population. However, according to data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in 2020, the state of Indiana had an estimated 5,664 homeless individuals, including those who were living in shelters and those who were unsheltered. This number reflects a decrease from the previous year, when there were an estimated 6,471 homeless individuals in the state.

It’s important to note that these numbers are only estimates, and the actual number of homeless individuals in Indiana may be higher or lower. Additionally, these numbers do not account for the number of individuals who are at risk of homelessness or who are experiencing housing insecurity.

Executive Summary

Project Description

The goal of the project is to provide safe and stable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness in our community, including women and children who are victims of domestic abuse and want to escape abuse, but have nowhere to seek refuge. Through this project, our organization, The Comfort Home Place, aims to acquire and renovate housing units that will be used to provide permanent, supportive housing for these individuals.

To achieve this goal, we plan to identify and purchase suitable housing units that meet the needs of our clients. These units will be purchased using funds from our project budget. Once we have acquired the units, we will work with contractors and other professionals to ensure that the units are up to code and meet the needs of our clients. This may include renovations such as new roofs, windows, and appliances, as well as any necessary repairs.

Once the units are fully renovated, they will be made available to our clients as permanent, supportive housing. In addition to providing a safe and stable living environment, we will also offer our clients access to services such as healthcare, job training, and counseling to help them achieve self-sufficiency and break the cycle of homelessness.

We expect that the project will have a significant positive impact on the lives of those experiencing homelessness in our community. By providing safe and stable housing, we hope to help our clients achieve a better future and a more hopeful outlook.
